Hip Hop Artists Bring the Beat (For Free) March 18th

Posted by Charlee Redman on 03/01 at 07:13 PM

Some people have all the luck and talent. Hip hop artist Mike Posner is one of these fortunate people. He’s a senior at Duke University majoring in sociology and business, he recently signed a record deal with Sony’s J Records, and he’ll be performing on Bamboozle and Warped Tour later this year. He’s only 21 years old. His music is fresh, stylistically varied, and never quite you’d expect - not exactly pop, or hip hop, but something drawn from diverse influences.

Dr. Dog Delivers A Powerful Performance at the State Theatre

Posted by Michael Giannelli on 03/01 at 06:54 PM

Formed in 1999 by Toby Leaman (bass) and Scott McMicken (lead guitar), Dr. Dog began as an offshoot of the duo’s previous group Raccoon.  The band experienced a certain degree of turnover early on before settling on its current lineup, which along with the two frontmen consists of Frank McElroy (rhythm guitar), Zach Miller (keyboard), and Eric Slick (drums).  The band’s sound has hints of 1960’s rock and roll, a style that employs a touch of psychedelia to go along with their appreciation for some good old fashioned pop.

THON Music

Posted by Carly Mallenbaum on 02/18 at 12:43 AM

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for a while, you probably know that THON, the 46-hour dance maraTHON in which Penn State dancers stay on their feet to raise money to for children with cancer (watch if you’re clueless) is this weekend.

Considering it’s meant to be a weekend-long dance party, there is constant music playing at THON.  DJ Larry Moore spins most of the tunes, but there is also a bunch of LIVE MUSIC.  Even if you don’t have a specific THON child or a PSU dancer to support it’s worth going to the Bryce Jordan Center this weekend to take in the crazy-awesome THON scene and check out the bands.  Though I can’t tell you when they play (at THON you’re not ever supposed to talk about what time it is), here is a rundown of who will be performing:

Noontime Concert Series at the HUB

Posted by Carly Mallenbaum on 02/07 at 10:53 PM

Every Friday of this month, the Student Programming Association will be sponsoring (with the help of your Student Activities Fees) noontime concerts.  The shows are FREE and on the first floor lounge of the HUB (above the sushi place).  The concert has a laid-back vibe: there are about 40 comfy chairs set up and the band is right in front of the seats (not on an elevated stage).  The music from the band plays throughout the HUB, so you can listen a bit before you commit to sitting upstairs.  I recommend you grab lunch, grab a friend, grab a chair and listen to some pretty decent live music.
